State flags take a backseat to national ones — the U.S. flag is always flown at the top of a flagpole. It should be above any other flag it’s displayed with, so it gets the position of the highest honor. But the state flag comes second, above any other flags that might be on display. 

If you’re flying multiple state flags on the same flagpole, they’re usually put in the order in which the states joined the union, or ordered alphabetically.

Though they may not hold the same weight as the Star-Spangled Banner, state flags represent the culture, history, and heritage of a state or region. Each one is pretty unique, from the Lone Star of Texas to the Magnolia of Mississippi.
